Illapu is a Chilean band of Andean folklore founded in 1971, in Antofagasta. The name Illapu comes from Quechua which means "Lightning" (Literally "Rayo en voz"). In its first discs the group was characterized by the rescue of instruments, melodies and lyrics related to the Andean culture. The lyric of Illapu focuses as much on the autochthonous and the folkloric as on the social and political, each album has as subjects the context of the moment from the popular perspective, highlighting the social problems, proposing solutions and sometimes even being premonitory. This is one of the keys to the success of the group and its success with people from all over the world and especially from Latin America. Musically, they explore different styles, based on Andean music and Latin American folklore, mixing with jazz, rock, reggae, among others. They are characterized by the changes of voices in their songs, where each of its members has a characteristic record. They usually incorporate in their songs the "voices games" that go downhill, from the acute voices to the bass or rising, from the most serious to the most acute voices ..
